Recently, the Chinese Agricultural Technology
Center organized experts, scientific researchers, and professors to conduct a
comprehensive analysis on maize diseases and pests. Their analysis is based on
factors such as the numbers of observed insects, planting systems, crop layouts
and climate. According to the analysis, it is expected that maize diseases and
pests will affect a total area of 66 million hectares in 2022, with 46 million
hectares affected by pests and 20 million hectares area affected by various
diseases. Common pests and diseases such as fall armyworms, lawn armyworms, and
southern corn rust will have a great threat on the production and safety of
corn in China.
According to observations made by the National
Climate Center in China, during January and February in 2022, periods of
unusually low temperature, rain, snow and freezing weather have occurred in the
southwest region of China. In addition, precipitation in the southern parts of
areas south of the Yangtze River is expected to be 2-5% less than average
during the spring, which will lead to certain adverse effects on the
overwintering of crops and also lead to breeding of migratory pests such as
fall armyworms and lawn armyworms.
During summer, precipitation in China's
Northeast region, North region, South region, and the west part of the
Southwest Region is expected to be high, which will be beneficial for most
pests. The number of typhoons expected to land in China is also greater than
usual, and the expected intensity is stronger. A typhoon heading north will
likely cause the recurrence of epidemic diseases such as southern corn rust.
Southern corn rust expected to affect a large area
during 2022
Regarding the distribution of different maize
diseases, southern corn rust is prevalent in summer corn farmland in the
Huanghuaihai area, with a total area 5.3
million hectares of corn farmland affected across China. Northern corn leaf
blight is prevalent among in China's Northeast region, North region, Northwest
region and Southwest region, with a total area of 5 million hectares affected
across China. Southern corn leaf blight is prevalent in the China's
Huanghuaihai region and Southwest region, with a total area of 2.5 hectares
affected across China. Other diseases which may also occur across China include
maize ear rot, frogeye leaf spot, corn anthracnose, maize stalk rot, corn smut,
maize head smut, and corn stunt.
China organizes experts to develop plan for crop damage mitigation
According to observations and forecasts from
China's Network for Measuring and Reporting Crop Diseases and Insect Pests, as
well as analysis from experts, it is also expected that the crop diseases and
pests for wheat, rice, corn, as well as potatos will show a severe upward trend
in 2022. According to the network, crop diseases and pests are expected to
affect a total area of 143 million hectares in 2022, which is an increase of
13.5% compared to the occurrence area in 2021 and 10.7% compared to the the
average occurrence area over the recent five years. These diseases and pests
pose a threat to more than 70% of the production areas, and it is necessary to
strengthen their prevention and control, take effective measures in a timely
manner, resolutely curb the recurrence of harm, and strive to reduce disaster
losses. In response of these diseases and pests, the Chinese government
formulated a plan to control the overall damage loss rate of major crop
diseases and insect pests to within 5%.
